Originally Ecler was designing and manufacturing HI-FI audio products but in early seventies decided to start working in professional audio. The main reason was the strong demand of audio solutions for the buoyant tourist industry in Spain. Hotels, bars, restaurants and clubs were opening all along the Spanish coast. For more than thirty years Spain was in the top three countries in the world receiving more tourists per year and is still the first country in the world with more bars and clubs per inhabitant. This was the background were Ecler grew up as a company. This meant designing products (mainly amplifiers) able to supply all the power all the time in the most tough conditions (working at maximum power for many hours and keeping always the same level of output power) and being always reliable (the sound system cannot stop because it is the heart of the club / bar).
This aim to develop reliable and top quality audio amplifiers led us to develop and own a patent on SPM (Switching Power MOSFET) Technology. The project was launched in late 80’s in collaboration with Motorola and in 1988 first products were in the market (PAM 500 and PAM 800). This component (SPM) was previously used only in the robotics industry and Ecler was the first company to develop a design in pro audio amplification.
There are three main components used in audio amplifiers design: bipolar transistor (90% of manufacturers), standard MOSFET (almost 10% of manufacturers) and SPM (patented by Ecler). SPM has two main advantages front the other two:
- SPM has a lower internal resistance and therefore is more efficient. Less power is lost into heat. This means our amplifiers are more reliable because our components suffer less thermal stress and therefore our MTBF (medium time between failures) is longer. If you test our amplifiers at 2 ohms with hard music against other competitors always those will stop earlier due to thermal protection than ours
- SPM is a faster component. Seven times faster than bipolar transistor and twice faster than standard MOSFET. This means better sound reproduction and therefore more sound quality. Look at our slew rate values and compare them to other brands (slew rate measures the highest voltage that can be reached in one microsecond)
In 1995 our amplifier PAM 1400 was chosen the Best Buys in a excellent comparative test driven by prestigious German magazine Production Partner. The 20 top worldwide amplifier brands took part in that test (QSC, CROWN, CREST, YAMAHA, CARVER, CAMCO, etc).
In 1997 Ecler receives an award for technological innovation (SPM Technology) from Catalonian Government.
In 1998 Ecler launched the SPM 100 amplification technology – Channel N which allowed operation in 100V line without transformer at the output.
This fact had several advantages:
- Improved frequency response (specially at low frequencies)
- Convection cooling (100% silent and increased reliability)
- Great efficiency
- Low weight
Furthermore Ecler as a brand had a positive influence from DJs. Audio is about music and Ecler has been recognized as one of the best manufacturers of DJ mixers in the world because it is a brand that offers the best sound quality. Designing the perfect mixer relies on a perfect combination of engineering know-how and inputs from experience artists. Ecler always maintained a strong relation with forward thinking artists who were grouped in the PRO TEAM, an international crew of professional DJs with a very diverse music background: minimal, breaks, house, techno, trance… Top names like Ricardo Villalobos, Michael Mayer, Antoine Clamaran, John Acquaviva, Satoshi Tomiie, Noisy Stylus… or clubs like Pacha Marrakech (biggest club in Africa), Smart Bar Chicago (club number 1 in USA) or Café del Mar Ibiza (top Mediterranean destination) rely on Ecler.
But there was another important influence behind: the city of Barcelona. Barcelona is a well-known spot because of its creativity. Artists like Gaudi (architect of world famous church Sagrada Familia) show how creativity is important for Barcelona entrepreneurs. Therefore for Ecler was a key point not only to design audio products but to innovate. Innovate on electronics but also on external design.
In the last years ECLER has achieved a global position in pro AV market delivering solutions into six main vertical markets: EDUCATION, CORPORATE, COMMERCIAL, HOSPITALITY, SPORTS WELLNESS and LEISURE. An extensive network covering more than 50 countries provides the right service and solutions to our customers.
To be environmentally sustainable is our last achievement. Therefore all our designs are conceived with the target of being energy efficient. SPM Technology great efficiency, class D amplifiers, switching power supplies and auto-standby features are common in most of our solutions.
